Modernizing the 70's

This year we've seen a big revival of 1970's fashion. Many runway collections have been using the earthy color palettes, silhouettes, and accessories popular from the time. But to avoid looking like you just stepped out of a time machine, it is important to contrast your look with modern pieces.
Lexie's outfit incorporates two trend of the time: vests, flared jeans. Originally fur and fringe vests were common in shades of brown, but here she created a more updated look by wearing shades of grey. This would also work by finding a fur or suede vest in black. Her flared denim are a slightly slimmer shape than traditional flares and the dark wash makes it more sophisticated.
Emily took on the 70's color palette by wearing her patterned maxi, which was also popular at the time. To make her look more clean and professional she paired the skirt with a classic white button up. Her soft curls also add a contemporary aspect to the middle part.
Claire went with a denim focused route with her popover dress, accented by her floral headwrap. While this dress in itself is very 70's it can still be made current. She chose to wear leggings and oxfords to tone down her look.
The key to making the 70's modern is to combine it with other current trends in order to balance your outfit. The pieces you choose for this look should be more of an adaptation than a recreation of the 1970's so that you look like you actually belong in this decade.
